Coming back to uni for my second year, it was looking like an overwhelming first semester, with
a heavy focus on programming where each module was on a different language: C++, C#, and
JavaScript (in Phaser). Regardless, I was determined to dive in headfirst and keep my head down.
This was the first project I worked on in a sequential order (to not go insane). I learned,
adapted, and worked long hours everyday for roughly five weeks to complete it.
Last year, I created Flax: Bot City, a first-person shooter game in Unreal Engine 5. This year,
I had to create a web-based game using the Phaser engine.
This gave me the opportunity to create a new iteration of the Flax universe with a 2D
side-scroller game. Generating, developing, and refining ideas for my dream game (Flax: The
Game, a third-person 3D platformer) as I'm creating these smaller projects during my studies at
university has been an amazing opportunity. Although, the other two modules of this semester
were focused on programming (AI agents using A*, and creating an ECS engine subsystem) rather
than game design, but are still vital! The vision for Flax: 2D
came quite early: gliding in a 2D side-scroller, implementing 2D depictions of other core
mechanics I wish to develop in Flax: The Game, such as pole swinging and geyser traversing.
Although I wish I had a little more time to continue the development of this game (and the
limits of the Phaser engine were not so restrictive), I am proud of what I accomplished in the
time I had. Please check it out and play it! Hit me up on LinkedIn with any feedback or other
enquiries! :D
